Barcelona has established itself as an active, diverse city and an international benchmark in organizing sporting events. This projection, combined with the constant evolution of physical and sports practice habits, has required ensuring a network of facilities capable of meeting both the daily needs of the citizenry and the challenges associated with a city with a global sporting vocation. Ensuring access for all citizens to quality physical and sports activities has required a comprehensive, up-to-date, and geographically balanced vision of the city's sports facilities. From the Barcelona Sports Institute, Itik Consultoria has been commissioned to develop the Map of Sports Facilities and Equipment and the Barcelona Sports Facilities Plan 2019-2035. The objective has been to identify current and future needs, detect imbalances between districts, analyze the saturation of facilities, and establish a strategic plan aimed at improving the quality of life for the city's residents.
At Itik Consultoria, we have developed a comprehensive process for planning sports facilities, structured in three phases: analysis of the sports system, territorial diagnosis, and definition of action proposals. To prepare the analysis and diagnosis, we combined data study with extensive fieldwork. Interviews were conducted with district representatives, visits were made to municipal and school facilities, a census of commercial private facilities was carried out, and a review of sports elements in public spaces was performed. The levels of use and saturation of the facilities were also analyzed. From this process, 4 strategic lines, 4 areas of action, and 99 proposals have been defined, differentiating between district-level and city-wide projects, and incorporating alternatives to facilitate their feasibility. The Barcelona 2035 Sports Facilities Plan has been consolidated as a reference tool to guide investment, prioritize actions, and advance towards a more accessible, efficient, and balanced sports network.
